Taapsee was born on 1 August 1988 in a Punjabi family in Delhi.[2] After completing her graduation in computer science engineering from the Guru Tegh Bahadur Institute of Technology in New Delhi,[3] she worked as software engineer.[4] Taapsee has developed "fontswap", an application for the iPhone.[5] She also worked as a full-time model, which eventually led her to acting.[6] Taapsee has appeared in several commercials, and won titles such as "Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face" and "Safi Femina Miss Beautiful Skin" during her modelling days.[4][7]
Taapsee made her cinematic debut in 2010 with K. Raghavendra Rao's romantic-musical Jhummandi Naadam.[8] Her next film Aadukalam (2011), marked her debut in Tamil cinema. She played the role of an Anglo-Indian girl falling in love with a rural guy played by Dhanush.[9] The film set in the backdrop of cock fight prevailing in villages adjacent to Madurai. The film was critically acclaimed and proceeded to win six National Film Awards at the 58th National Film Awards.[10] She returned to the Telugu film industry with Vastadu Naa Raju where she starred opposite Vishnu Manchu. She made a foray into the Malayalam film industry later that year, through Doubles opposite Mammootty.[11]
"Initially, I wanted to be a full-time model and never thought I could act. As time went by, modelling became not that exciting or enjoyable, as posing in front of the camera became monotonous. Also, I felt my name was not being highlighted. The name gets highlighted only in films. So I wanted to act."[2]
In her next release, Mr. Perfect, where she acted with Prabhas and Kajal Aggarwal, was a moderate success.[12] She starred in a high budget film titled Veera opposite Ravi Teja and Kajal Aggarwal,[13] got moderate reviews.[14] Her latest release, Vandhaan Vendraan got mixed reviews and did not fare well at the box office.[15] She got her next offer in Krishna Vamsi's Mogudu where she acted as a traditional Telugu girl and got critical acclaim for her performance opposite Gopichand. She is currently working on Bollywood film Chashme Baddoor.[4]
